"An older Streeterville rental with a killer location and a price that reflects its age — in a good way."
Upper Level's exclusive rating for Chicago winter survivability — indoor parking, pedway access, CTA proximity, and wind exposure.
Cityfront Place at 455 E Illinois is one of Streeterville's older rental towers — built in 1991, it predates the wave of glass-and-steel luxury rentals that now dominate the neighborhood. That age shows in the finishes and common areas, but it also shows in the pricing: you can get a Streeterville address at a meaningful discount compared to newer buildings.
The location is genuinely excellent. You're steps from the Chicago River, a short walk to Navy Pier, and close to the Mag Mile. The building sits in the Cityfront Center development, a planned mixed-use district that gives it a slightly more ordered, campus-like feel than the surrounding blocks.
The amenities are functional rather than impressive — outdoor pool, gym, doorman. The building has been maintained but not significantly renovated, so expect dated hallways and older unit finishes in many apartments. Management is adequate. The value proposition is the main draw: Streeterville location at a price point that's hard to find in newer buildings.
A mix of long-term residents who've been here for years and value the location-to-price ratio, medical professionals from Northwestern Memorial, and younger renters who want Streeterville without the premium price of newer towers.
Streeterville's eastern edge, close to the Chicago River and Navy Pier. The Cityfront Center development creates a pleasant, walkable environment. The lakefront path is a short walk. Navy Pier is right there — great for fireworks, less great for summer tourist traffic.
Cityfront Place is the worst-looking building in the best location. If you're price-sensitive and location-focused, it's genuinely one of the better deals in Streeterville. The building isn't pretty but the address is real.
Some units have been renovated by individual landlords; others are original 1991 finishes. Ask specifically about renovation status before signing. The difference in quality between a renovated and unrenovated unit is significant.
Cityfront Place is Streeterville's best value play — an older building in an excellent location at a price that reflects its age. Good for renters who prioritize neighborhood over building quality.
